This week is kind of wild. We have an M. Night Shyamalan movie I’m excited for, a movie whose star is a silent sheep, people revolting against a decade-long alien presence, the most boring thing on the face of the Earth, and Godzilla going one-v-one against a three-headed Titan. What a time to be alive.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters

Although it does not give me the sweet sounds of “Clair de Lune,” I am still in love with what this movie is giving me. Instead of focusing on the majesty of the creatures that are 100% going to murder us, this trailer instead focuses on the fact that these majestic creatures are 100% going to murder us. That is unless Godzilla can save the day, which, judging by the fact that we have Godzilla vs Kong coming in 2020, I’m guessing he good. Good luck, other monsters. *looks at all the other monsters* Oh, God, good luck Godzilla. That one shot of Ghidorah and Godzilla on opposite sides of the screens does an excellent job of showing just how puny our hero is compared to these other monsters, but I still feel like we’re in good hands. I am very glad to be Godzilla’s pet.

Farmageddon: A Shaun The Sheep Movie

Although they are typically very well received, I have seen basically zero of the movies by this group, with the exception of their debut movie, Chicken Run, and, appropriately enough, the first Shaun The Sheep movie. I remember very little about Chicken Run (I think the Mel Gibson rooster sings Dion’s “The Wanderer” at one point, which, weird reference), although I liked it as a 9-year old, but Shaun The Sheep  was a pleasant little flick that I got to watch with my now father-in-law, and this seems to be picking up where the first one left off, at least in tone. The first one did not suggest that aliens existed, although this trailer handles the reveal well, by setting up the alien, showing us it was all a gag to bother the farmer, and then to have actual aliens show up. This isn’t something that I can really see myself going to see in the theater, but I would be perfectly content to have a pleasant evening with it sometime in my home.

Glass

It says a lot about how much I ended up liking Split that I can see the words “from M. Night Shyamalan” and not laugh anymore. This movie continues to impress me with what it is showing, especially with the addition of Sarah Paulson incorrectly telling them about their delusions of grandeur. I’m really curious to see how well Shyamalan ends up bringing all of these characters together into one coherent narrative, but the idea of getting to watch Samuel L. Jackson and James McAvoy break out of a prison together is certainly enticing enough to make me think that we might be in a timeline where Shyamalan is good again. Who knew?

Captive State

A little bit of a case of less is more, with this movie’s first teaser doing a much better job of selling me on the movie than the full trailer featured here. It’s interesting to see an alien invasion movie that takes place this long after a successful alien invasion, and the idea of getting to watch people try to rise up against something that is this ingrained into the culture, to the point of a lot of people genuinely praising their presence, is enticing (especially when one of those revolutionaries is Ben Daniels, whose priest on the TV version of The Exorcist taunted and punched demons on the reg). The light pulse the aliens use to neutralize our hero’s father was genuinely kind of daunting, but from there the actual aliens themselves seemed much less interesting, even if their design was fairly interesting-looking from the quick glimpses that we have of them. This isn’t necessarily a bad trailer, but the first teaser had me way more excited for what was to come.

Downton Abbey

Listen, y’all. I never watched this show so this does nothing for me. Everything looks very British and bland, so, that fits my understanding of what this show was.

Rankings and Summaries

1. Godzilla: King of the Monsters– Even without an incredible music cue, the image of Godzilla fighting a three-headed Titan that towers over him is more than enough to put this trailer in the top slot.
2. Glass– This is probably the last trailer for this movie before it comes out, and I think it’s fair to say I’m firmly back on the M. Night Shyamalan train, and I’m only most annoyed by it.
3. Farmageddon: A Shaun The Sheep Movie– Another pleasant addition to the production company’s filmography, this looks like a perfect movie to relax with at home.
4. Captive State– If Ben Daniels doesn’t backhand an alien in this movie, why are we even making it?
5. Downton Abbey– I am not this movie’s audience.
